Cause: Chronic irritation of the nail from rubbing in shoes or previous trauma to the nail.
Appearance: Toenail loose and detached from the nail bed skin.
Treatment: Immediate removal of loose nail followed by antibiotic ointment and bandage.
Long-term prognosis: Nail can become thickened if the nail root is involved, otherwise good.
