Cause: Chronic irritation of the nail from rubbing in shoes or previous trauma to the nail. Hereditary component.
Appearance: Thickened, discolored nail with debris.
Treatment: Mechanical debridement, topical cream/ solution/ laser /oral pills
Long-term prognosis: Toenail fungus takes 9 months to treat effectively at a minimum- oral pills are usually taken for 3 months, topical medicine should be applied once to twice a day depending on the strength, and laser should be performed monthly. OTC treatments do not have a good long term prognosis.
